Superman Daily Comic Strips Lot

The
SUPERMAN DAILY COMIC STRIPS AUCTION

HUGE COLLECTION of Daily Newspaper Comic Strips
From The Classic Siegal & Shuster Superman Series

1939 - 1943

>>> THIS IS IT!  The greatest auction for Superman Daily Newspaper Comic Strips to find its way onto eBay in a very long time.

WHAT IS BEING SOLD:  A large collection (More than 1100 strips) of very early Superman newspaper comic strips, from the first few years of the strip.  Although originally conceived as a comic strip by creators Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster in the early 1930's, Superman nonetheless managed to make his first published appearance in the June 1938 issue of DC Comics' Action Comics (No. 1).  Making his way the long way around, Superman finally debuted in the newspaper as a daily on January 16, 1939, and later, on November 5, 1939, as a Sunday comic strip.

DAILY STRIPS:  This collection of Daily Newspaper Strips is almost complete for the years 1940 through 1943, including a few from 1939.  These strips are a really nice condition (overall), most in the early large size, with some in a smaller format.  (One strip is in a 2-over-2 square fomat)  All are from the Kansas City Star from the years 1940 through 1943.

KANSAS CITY STAR:  As with quite a few of the earlier carriers of the Superman strip, the Kansas City Star's run did not start at the beginning.  The Star began carrying Superman in late-1939, and attempted to "catch up" to the then-current run by doing some less-than-expert editing of a couple of storylines.  As a result, some of the Star's earlier run is a bit choppy and abridged.  This collection of Superman starts with some of the 1939 storyline: (## 13, 14, 16, 19, 20, 23-25, 27-30), and then moves into the late-1939 to early-1940 stories: (##289-294, 300), and then comes some of the edited strips, with five strips included which are edited down from the series of ##301-325.

At this point, it appears that the Star has "caught up" with the current series, and starting with strip #325 (1940), the collection is fairly complete through late-1943.  The collection stacks up as follows:

  • 1939-1940 (including the "catch-up" and edited strips)  =  298 strips

  • 1941  =  305 strips

  • 1942  =  288 strips

  • 1943  =  261 strips

Thus, this collection includes a total of 1,152 highly desirable, and beautiful daily newspaper comic strips, from the classic, Siegel and Shuster series.  These strips are in very nice condition, although, understandably, not perfect.  See the Gallery of Photos, starting below, for 116 photos which include All of the strips contained in this lot.  (Although not very high resolution, the photos show enough detail to get a good idea of their condition.)  Many (or most) have large margins; their paper is for the most part off-white, and is flexible, not brittle.  This is a really nice lot.
